Justin Stafford of Keaton Quilts
Meet Justin! A fabric designer, pattern writer, teacher, and fiber artist located in the heart of the East Village in NYC. And we couldn't forget about his passionate CEO, Diane Keaton, a 3 year old wire fox terrier poodle mix.
This has to be one of our favorite maker stories to date. Read on to learn more about Justin and Diane!
What is your favorite/least favorite part of the creative process?
My favorite part of the creative process would have to be the enjoyment in the journey my ideas take as they come to life - from a thought or idea in my mind to an eventual physical piece. When I first started sewing and crafting in my early teenage years, I remember having a lead foot on the sewing machine and it definitely showed in my work. I would want to make whatever I was working on as fast as I could so I could jump onto the next. These days, I'm quite the opposite. I like to think I've learned a lot in the almost twenty years I've been sewing on the technical end but the most important without a doubt is learning to slow down and enjoy each step of the process and honoring the time I've spent on a piece by doing it to the best of my ability.
Who inspires you?
I would say that I find most of my inspiration in my environment. I live in the the east village of New York City and love to explore everything it has to offer with Diane Keaton by my side. We're always going on walks and taking in all of the sights of the city, the street art, community gardens, museums, shows, galleries and events. The city is so vibrant, full of life and features so much fascinating juxtaposition of style and beauty. If I'm ever struggling with a creative block, just taking a walk with Diane helps get that creative mojo back.
What are some of your other hobbies or interests?
I love oil painting, paper crafting, illustration, weight lifting, yoga, and Legos. I've got a massive Lego city built on my counter with a movie theater, mall, bank, pet shop, restaurants and over 1000 mini figures.
What was the inspiration behind the name Keaton Quilts?
I named it after my little pup, Diane Keaton who also happens to be Keaton Quilts CEO. I love that my job allows me to spend my days with her by my side. She's a great little girl but a bossy CEO - always begging for snacks and mid afternoon belly rubs.
What is up next for you?
I've got two books on the way and also a quilting fabric line in the works. I'll also finally be releasing the pattern for my fiber chickens late this spring.
